Packing Light: Lessons from the Road and Life

When I started my new position in December, I knew it would come with a lot of travel. What I didn’t know was how much it would teach me, not just about work, but about life.
In those early trips, I was a classic over-packer. My suitcase was heavy with outfits for every possible scenario. Those extra shoes, backup jackets, multiple “just in case” options. I thought I was being prepared. In reality, I was carrying more than I needed, and it made every journey feel heavier, harder, and more stressful than it had to be.
Over time, I learned how to travel lighter. I started to assess exactly what I needed for each trip. I learned to choose versatile pieces I could mix and match. I realized I didn’t need five extra outfits for “what if” moments that never came. I created a simple packing (and unpacking) system that made travel feel easier, more intentional, and much less overwhelming.
And somewhere between airport terminals and hotel rooms, it hit me: this wasn’t just about my suitcase. This was a lesson about life.
How often do we move through life carrying way more than we need? Worry, comparison, doubt, approval from others, emotional baggage that only weighs us down. We tell ourselves we’re being “prepared” when really, we’re just burdening ourselves with extra stress and unnecessary pressure.
Packing lighter, both in travel and in life, means trusting that what you have is enough. It means shedding the need for endless options and backup plans for every unforeseen circumstance. It’s choosing intentionality over excess. Focus over fear.
When I travel now, I know exactly what I’m going to wear. There’s less decision fatigue. Less stress. And ironically, I feel more prepared, not less. Because preparation isn’t about carrying everything,it’s about carrying what’s essential.
I’m learning to apply the same principle to my daily life: only take what I need. Let go of what no longer serves me. Trust that God has equipped me for the road ahead without me needing to bring every fear, insecurity, and “just in case” tucked into my emotional suitcase.
Packing light makes the journey smoother. It frees me to move more easily, more confidently. And most importantly, it makes room for what matters most.
